Managing Director of the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, Michael Carpenter believes that a county’s commitment to democratic norms and institutions remains the key to membership in NATO and the EU.
“While NATO has a particular interest in defense reform, both NATO and the EU attach a great deal of significance to a county's commitment to democratic norms and institutions. In my opinion, that commitment remains the key to membership in both organizations,” he told the Accent.
According to Carpenter, he thinks that the Biden administration continues to support Georgia in implementing reforms that will enable the country to join the Euro-Atlantic institutions in the future.
“The United States has always supported Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations and I think the Biden administration will be eager to work with Georgia's government to advance the reforms that will make membership in Euro-Atlantic institutions possible,” he said.
