Georgia’s Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze said on Friday that the ruling Georgian Dream party signs the EU-proposed compromise document of March 31, aiming to solve Georgia’s political crisis.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center John E. Herbst commends the Georgian Dream for signing the document.

According to him, the Georgian ruling party and the opposition should agree to this document.

“I would like to commend Georgian Dream and recommend the opposition to do the same. I think it is already clear to everyone how critical it is to end this political crisis,” Herbst told the Accent.

When asked about former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s forthcoming opposition party, Herbst said that Gakharia’s connection with former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanisvili is well-known, but it is hard to say if Gakharia will continue this relationship.

“It is understood in the U.S., it is also understood that Gakharia is an intelligent man. His decision to resign following the arrest of an opposition leader was very sensitive. These are the views that are in the Washington,” he said.

As for the developments around Ukraine, Herbst said that Russian military build-up along the borders of Ukraine is a fact; although he believes that Moscow will not go on a larger escalation.

“Because Moscow will face more painful sanctions in this case, it will face Ukrainians fighting to defend their land. There will be casualties from the Russian side as well, and then it will be a real problem for Putin to hide this from his people," Herbst said.

As for the U.S. support, he said the United States is considering sending additional military equipment to Ukraine.
