The European Parliament denies information spread by the de facto authorities of occupied Abkhazia and states it will not send an observation mission to the so-called presidential elections in the occupied region.

‘The European Parliament will not send an observation mission to the so called presidential elections in Abkhazia. Therefore, neither the European Parliament nor any of its official bodies (including the President, the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG)) have or will commit to observe such "elections". Should individual MEPs choose to travel to Abkhazia in July 2019 and/or make public comments on developments there, this would be on a purely personal basis and in no way represent the position of the European Parliament or the EU,’ the Accent was told by the European Parliament Press Service.

On May 1, 2019 de facto deputy minister of foreign affairs of occupied Abkhazia, Irakli Tuzhba said that they had invited MEPs to observe the so-called presidential elections in occupied Abkhazia. “MEPs gave us a promise to observe the presidential elections,’ he claimed.

The so-called presidential elections in occupied Abkhazia are scheduled for July 21. 2019.
